Tiberius Claudius Maximus served under the emperor Trajan in the great wars in Central Europe and the Middle East. He was decorated three times for bravery and became famous for hunting down Rome's great enemy, Decebalus. This volume and its prequel The Legionary trace Maximus's career from the day he entered the Seventh Legion on the Danube frontier to the day he retired as a cavalry officer in Mesopotamia some 30 years later. Connolly calls on a vast array of archaeological material to provide a unique portrait of the life of an ordinary man who lived during an extraordinary period in Western history.

Full-color photographs and illustrations and detailed sketches grace every page of this entry in an already crowded field of books on the subject. Detailed drawings of houses, shops, and public buildings such as baths, theatres, and temples in their original conditions help readers understand the day to day workings of a Roman town in the first century a.d. Particularly striking are the full-page cutaways of buildings. Each subject is addressed in a two-page layout. Such prosaic details as sewage systems and laundering techniques are given as much attention as gladiator games and drama. The accompanying text is sometimes a bit technical, and some Latin terms are not fully explained. A careful introduction illuminates not only the eruption, but also the early history of the city and the surrounding area.

Connolly's approach to history is unique, tracing the career of Roman soldier Tiberius Claudius Maximus. Using archaeological material including tombstones and original Roman documents, Connolly examines the progression of Maximus from the time he entered the Seventh Legion on the Danube frontier in central Europe in 85 a.d. , to the day that Maximus retired as a cavalry officer in Mesopotamia. Readers discover details of warfare and army life of the period, including weapons, tactics, training, and the mundane daily routines. Richly illustrated, with maps and index, The Legionary and The Cavalryman complement the existing literature on Roman history. Background reading, although not essential, would benefit readers.

Based on the excavation of a fort near Hadrian's Wall, this book is distinguished by excellent, detailed illustrations. The defensive walls, living quarters, and adjacent buildings are all detailed in the drawings. Subjects covered include the structure's physical construction, the military necessity for its placement, lives of average soldiers and commanding officers, and a brief overview of the historical context of the fort. Unfortunately, the accompanying text is not so lively. Readers with little background in Roman history and culture can expect no help in the form of a glossary or even any explanation of some of the more technical terms. Good maps are also lacking. Use this to supplement more comprehensive works or where pictorial representation is needed.

The Napoleonic Wars, 2 Volumes Set

Osprey Publishing | 2001-09-25 | ISBN: 1841762989 | 96 + 96 pages | PDF | 6,1 + 6,3 MB
In 1808 Napoleon dominated Europe, but the peace was not to survive for long. Todd Fisher continues his detailed account of the Napoleonic Wars with Austria's attack against Napoleon in 1809. Despite being defeated at Aspern-Essling, Napoleon rallied his forces and emerged triumphant at Wagram. With glorious victory behind him Napoleon now turned his attention to Russia and invaded in 1812. Yet the army was not the Grand Armee of old, and even the capture of Moscow availed him nothing. The foe remained elusive, the decisive battle remained unfought. This book tells the full story of the now legendary retreat from Moscow, as the fighting force that had vanquished Europe perished in the snows of the Russian winter.

Written by four leading authorities on the classical world, here is a new history of ancient Greece that dynamically presents a generation of new scholarship on the birthplace of Western civilization.
Ranging from Greece's first beginnings in the Bronze Age through the tumultuous Hellenistic era dominated by Alexander the Great, this volume offers a truly wide-ranging portrait, blending the traditional political and military approach with a more modern accent on social and cultural history. Everything is included here--the sweeping philosophical systems of Plato and Aristotle, the daily lives of women in Athens, dramatic sea battles in the Aegean, the epic poetry of Homer, the rise of the city-state. The book offers illuminating descriptions of Sparta and Athens, recounts the Persian and Peloponnesian wars, evaluates the contributions of notable figures such as Solon, Cleisthenes, Pericles, and Philip II of Macedon, and discusses the remarkable rise of Alexander the Great. Throughout the book, the editors trace the slow evolution of Greek culture, revealing how the early Greeks borrowed from their neighbors, but eventually developed a distinctive culture of their own, marked by astonishing creativity, versatility, and resilience.
Featuring 17 original maps, over 80 photographs, and numerous "document boxes" which highlight a variety of primary source material, this book provides an account of the Greek world that is thoughtful and sophisticated while remaining accessible to the nonscholar. A dynamic collaboration between four renowned scholars Sarah Pomeroy, Stanley M. Burstein, Walter Donlan, and Jennifer Tolbert Roberts it is the definitive portrait of the fountainhead of Western philosophy, literature, science, and art.

Dr. Nunn's marvelous retrospective picks up where Guido Majno's seminal "The Healing Hand: Man and Wound in the Ancient World" leaves off with regard to ancient Egyptian medicine. The book is well referenced and easy to understand, and illustrated with 90 photographs and line drawings in addition to transliteration tables of hieroglyphic terms (which leads one to wonder if comments on a lack of "pictures" were made by someone who actually bothered to read the book). Highly recommended to the student of ancient medicine, the specialist of ancient occult and herbal practices related to healing, or those who study ancient Egypt.

69 AD: The Year of Four Emperors
Gwyn Morgan "69 AD: The Year of Four Emperors"
Oxford University Press, USA | 2005-12-01 | ISBN: 0195124685 | 336 pages | PDF | 1,1 MB
Oxford University Press, USA | 2005-12-01 | ISBN: 0195124685 | 336 pages | PDF | 1,1 MB
The Year of Four Emperors, so the ancient sources assure us, was one of the most chaotic, violent and frightening periods in all Roman history: a time of assassinations and civil wars, of armies so out of control that they had no qualms about occupying the city of Rome, and of ambitious men who seized power only to lose it, one after another.
In 69 AD, Gwyn Morgan offers a fresh look at this period, based on two considerations to which insufficient attention has been paid in the past. First, that we need to unravel rather than cherry-pick between the conflicting accounts of Tacitus, Plutarch and Suetonius, our three main sources of information. And second, that the role of the armies, as distinct from that of their commanders, has too often been exaggerated. The result is a remarkably accurate and insightful narrative history, filled with colorful portraits of the leading participants and new insights into the nature of the Roman military Morgan ranges from the suicide of Nero in June 68 to the triumph of Vespasian in December 69. In between, three other emperors hold power. We meet Galba, old, tightfisted and conservative, who was declared emperor in June 68 and assassinated in January 69. Otho, once Nero's boon companion, who was responsible for murdering Galba, seized power in a coup in Rome in January 69 and, to everybody's surprise, committed suicide three months later in a vain attempt to end the civil wars. Vitellius, as indolent as he was extravagant, who was put forward by two ambitious lieutenants, recognized by the senate in Rome once they heard of Otho's death in April, and cut down by Vespasian's partisans in the last days of December. And then there is Vespasian, the candidate who looked least likely to succeed, but (according to Tacitus) was still the first to be improved by becoming emperor.
A strikingly vivid account of ancient Rome, 69 AD is an original and compelling account of one of the best known but perhaps least understood periods in all Roman history.

Kennedy is a revised edition of a title originally published in 1976 as part of the "Political Profiles" series (Facts on File); Clinton is a new work in this new series. Each volume begins with a lengthy introduction that summarizes major events of each administration, beginning with the election campaign. Following this is an A-to-Z section of approximately 350 profiles in the first volume and 250 in the second. These concise biographical entries include major political figures from each term of office and discuss the relationship of the person to the administration. The articles in Kennedy cover only U.S. personalities, while those in Clinton include important world leaders. The volumes conclude with a chronology of the administration; lists of the members of Congress, the Supreme Court Justices, Executive Departments staffs, and state governors; and primary documents, which include the texts of speeches and treaties. A few average-quality, black-and-white photographs appear in each volume. The inclusion of primary sources makes these titles particularly valuable resources for research. - Ginny Gustin, Sonoma County Library System, Santa Rosa, CA
